04:00 hrs on Sunday 19th June saw 13 intrepid members take to the skies in 4 aircraft in our annual midsummer competition, the weather proved very helpful although a warm front was approaching from the west it promised to keep out of the way till mid afternoon, light south to southwest winds took the balloons from Bretherton towards Longridge and the Ribble Valley, flights lasted from one and a half hours to two and a half although there were rumours of a desperate lack of propane towards the end of one flight !
This year all participants made it back in time for breakfast at the Farmers Arms, Whitestake, unlike last time when one pilot and crew were late back due to finding themselves behind locked gates and had to be disqualified.
When the results were calculated it was very close, only 4 kilometres separating the distances flown by the 4 balloons, the defending champions, Emma Briggs & Steve Donkin came last this time with a flight of 17.3 kilometres, last times disqualified crew, Bob Jones with Peter and Brian Jones achieved 18.2 Km, Roy Battersby and brother Adrian 19.8 Km and the winner being Peter Donkin with Dave Court, Graeme Church and Nicky Roskell with a record 21.5 Km.
