40 Years Ago... A story by Kevin Meehan ....
As this year commemorates our 40th Anniversary, our number one member, Kevin Meehan, has kindly put together a story about the origins of the North West Balloon & Airship Club:

40 years ago, a group of pilots and crew from Cheshire, Lancashire
and Merseyside arranged to meet at Lostock Village hall , near
Northwich in Cheshire, to discuss the formation of a regional balloon
And as far as I can remember, the following pilots and crew were at the meeting – Members number 1 – Kevin and Helen Meehan and members number 2 - Malcolm and Libby Dear, Gron and Christine Edwards, Martin Holden, Ray Owens, Mike and Pam Parker and Edwin and Eileen Sutton from the Cheshire Balloon Club. It’s possible that Roger Murray and others were at the meeting.

After a couple of hours talking about our last flights at Holker Hall and a meeting at East Bridgford organised by the Nottingham Balloon Club, we had agreed on what ballooning activities we wanted to promote and organise but we hadn’t agreed on a name. Towards the end of the meeting, Helen arrived with our son Tom who was fast asleep in his carrycot. Edwin suggested that we go back to his house for a drink and something to eat – but hadn’t told his wife Eileen. She and Helen soon managed to work wonders in the kitchen and Edwin supplied the drinks. We soon came up with a name. We didn’t want to follow the Western and Eastern Regions and decided on the 315 ° Balloon Club with a balloon pointing in a NW direction – not on the slant but pointing to the NW! The rest is history.

Looking through my log book, some of the balloons that were operating in 1981 in the NW were : G-BBOO, G-BCOA, G-BCSX, G-BDOF, G-BEEF, G-BFIX,G-BHAT,G-BHGF, G-BISU, G-BISW, G-NWPR.

If you have an interest in hot air balloons - whether it be helping to crew, learning to become a pilot or simply enjoying just being around these spectacular aerostats, then feel free to join us. Contact one of the members (see Contacts, left) or come to one of the many ballooning events we have scheduled (best to check first - knowing the British weather!)
